چکیده
We examine the relationship between risk analysis and inequality analysis, using a questionnaire-experimental approach .The experiments focus on the effect of income transformations on the perceived rankings of income distributions in either a risk or inequality context. Both context and income levels are important in inßuencing rankings. Our thanks go to Stuart Birks, Rolf Cremer Wulf Gaertner and Jochen Jungeilges who assisted in running the questionnaires. This paper forms part of the research programme of the TMR network Living Standards, Inequality and Taxation [Contract No. ERBFMRXCT 980248] of the European Communities whose Þnancial support is gratefully acknowleged.

Inequality Perceptions, Distributional Norms, and Redistributive Preferences in East and West Germany
This paper studies differences in inequality perceptions, distributional norms, and redistributive preferences between East and West Germany. As expected, there are substantial differences with respect to all three of these measures. Surprisingly, however, differences in distributional norms are much smaller than differences with respect to inequality perceptions or redistributive preferences. ...
متن کاملIncome inequality, risk, and the transfer principle: A questionnaire-experimental investigation
This paper is about distributional perceptions with respect to inequality and risk. The Pigou–Dalton principle of transfers is one of the fundamental axioms in the analysis of inequality. We examine to what degree it is followed by people who evaluate income distributions and, moreover, whether it also plays a role in risk comparisons. Furthermore, we ask whether information on the width of the...

This paper investigates the gap between actual and perceived inequality in America and mechanisms driving perceptions. To measure perceived inequality, I used responses from the International Social Survey Programme asking respondents to identify a diagram that best describes his/her society, then matched survey responses to local housing prices. My research finds Americans consistently underes...
متن کاملAt Home on the Range? Lay Interpretations of Numerical Uncertainty Ranges.
Numerical uncertainty ranges are often used to convey the precision of a forecast. In three studies, we examined how users perceive the distribution underlying numerical ranges and test specific hypotheses about the display characteristics that affect these perceptions. We discuss five primary conclusions from these studies: (1) substantial variation exists in how people perceive the distributi...
متن کاملHow Does Monetary Policy Affect Household Income Distribution?
Over the last decades the research on monetary policy has largely concentrated on the impact of monetary authorities’ decisions on inflation and the fine-tuning of the macroeconomic, so that distributional effects of monetary policy which are non-trivial has been ignored. A view that has become increasingly popular since the financial crisis 2008 is that expansionary monetary policy can exacerb...
